What Causes Painful Red Patches On The Tongue?

Yes! Hello my name is Wendy and am a 54 yr old female. My tongue has patches that are very sore & red. They don t quite look like blisters, but kind of like a rash. I have had this for at least a month or so. It hurts immensely when I brush my teeth. The mint flavoring just about kills me, as does ketchup, salt, anything with an acidity base. I have a full upper partial and only my front 6 lower anterior teeth. I have used a gly-oxide cleanser, which burns extremely (but probably not as much as toothpaste). And yet I am not getting any better. Not really getting worse though either. Although some days it doesn t hurt as much as other days.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand..

As per your complain it seems that painful red patches over the tongue can be due to a condition known as Geographic tongue ..
Geographic Tongue leads to disappearance of tongue Papillae from some portions of tongue leading to bald or smooth appearance of tongue.
The exact cause is not known but it is considered to be genetic in origin..
Other causes can be stress, excessive consumption of citrus fruits and spicy foods, deficiency of vitamins, hormonal disturbance and allergy.
As there is pain or soreness in tongue you can gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine, take Ibuprofen for pain and do cold water rinses..
You can appply a steroid ointment over the tongue and take zinc supplements..
Take multivitamin supplements..
Avoid spicy food..
Take time for rest and control stress by meditation and breathing exercises..
If still there is no improvement consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
