What Causes Painful Muscle Spasms And Nausea Post A Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

I had gastric sleeve surgery about five years ago. Then 6 months later I had to have an emergency hysterectomy. Then about 3 years ago I had to have my gallbladder removed. I was still have lots of nausea so my surgeon checked for leaks and found none but the radiology report stated they seen a hightal (not spelled correctly) hernia. I have had about 3 attacks lately that feel very similar to the gallstones. It s a very painful muscle spasm and just like a charlie horse I have to walk it off or lay stretched out flat. They are getting more frequent and now going through to my back. My family doctor is only in the office once a week and APN s the rest of the time. Same with my neurologist that I see for my chronic migraines. I m not sure who or what to do next.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you have mentioned that you are getting frequent spasms and feel the symptoms of gallstones although you have already undergone cholecystectomy. As far as sleeve gastrectomy is concerned , i presume it was done for morbid obesity. Now coming to your problem it appears because of two reasons
1. Hiatal hernia
2 Decrease in stomach capacity
i would suggest few things which might help you
1 Small frequent meals
2 Avoid beverages, coffee ,excessive tea, spices and high fat diet
3 Take you dinner early and leave a gap of 2-3 hours before going to bed preferably with head end of bed elevated
4 Less fluid intake after evening
However if the symptoms still persist surgical option for hiatal hernia correction may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
