What Causes Painful Lymph Nodes In The Neck?

Have had a cold with lots of mucus - 4 weeks now - took mucinex etc. nothing seemed to make much difference. also had sore glands in my neck with it. was over it, I thought, then it started coming back with a vengeance. any suggestions. thank you
