What Causes Painful Lump In The Arm With Bruising Post Unsuccessful IV Drip Placement?

was taken to ER. by ambulance for severe heat exhaustion, left arm was tapped several times from an obvious inexperienced EMT Tech...Another more experienced Tech. stepped in and went and to my right arm and established the IV drip...That was 5 days ago 7/26/15...My left arm is now severely bruised, from lower forearm to the crease in my elbow, where a small very painful bump resides. Also have dark blackish veins branching out from inside of elbow. From the info.that I ve read....Blood clot seems likely. You reckon I should return for a evaluation?.Like NOW?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

I can understand your concern. Inadvertent puncture of veins by inexperienced individuals sometimes result in injury to veins. This might result in local inflammation which results in redness, swelling, pain over affected areas. Some times low grade fever also occurs. These symptoms occur due to thrombophlebitis. If symptoms are causing the pain then you can take a good analgesic drug if you have prescription or even Paracetamol can help. For more severe pains drugs like Ibuprofen or Diclofenac etc can help. Apply ice over affected parts to get local relief. For severe redness creams containing Heparin (Thrombophobe) can help. Just apply cream over affected part and this will provide local relief. Please visit a doctor if symptoms become worse.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Take care
