What Causes Painful Enlarged Circumvallate Papillae?

What causes painful enlarged circumvallate papillae? I am a 57 yr old male. This problem started over a week ago right after eating some strombolli with a good red sauce on the side. Now my whole tongue burns after nearly anything I eat. How long should I expect this to last?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that you have got allergic reaction to the food item you ate or the sauce which you ate..
The allergic reaction has caused irritation and inflammation of the tongue leading to swelling of the circumvallate papilla as well as irritation of the tongue and causing burning and pain on slight stimulation..

I would suggest you to take Benadryl or Allegra for reducing allergy symptoms..

Gargle with 1:1 solution of Milk of Magnesia and benadryl for relief..

Drink plenty of cold water to maintain hydration and get relieved of burning..

Sucking on ice pops can help..

In case of pain you can take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen for relief..

Avoid hot, spicy and hard foods..

Avoid taking the food stuffs that cause allergy to prevent further bouts of allergic reaction in future.

Hope this information helps..
