What Causes Painful Cramps And Heavy Bleeding During Menstruation In Older Adults?

I am 44 years old and have not had a period in 5 months. I took a pregnancy test and the result was not pregnant. I started my period today 6/10/2015 and I am in quite a lot of pain. I am also experiencing fluttery feelings along with excessive bleeding and cramps. Should I be concerned or is this all normal for a woman my age? Thank you.

Hello,

Since you did not have your periods since 5 months and are having it now, your period can be heavier and longer that usual. To get rid of abdominal cramps, you can take Spasmol (spasmoproxyvon), one SOS when required. Take antacids for relief. Stay at rest, avoid any heavy work. Heavy bleeding or irregular bleeding may be indicative of PCOD, polyp, fibroid, endometriosis, thyroid or hormonal issues, etc.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a gynecologist, you will be recommended to get routine urinalysis, blood tests, imaging tests and biopsy done if required to detect the pathology causing you discomfort. You will be treated accordingly. If obese, maintain healthy weight. Do regular walking and exercises. Stay away from addictions, avoid trans fat, full fat dairy products. Take home made nutritious food rich in minerals and protein.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
