What Causes Painful Bump With Scaly Skin?

I have a skin lesion near the edge of my ear (near the middle fold). I suspect it is squamous cell and have an appt. with a doctor - but not until June 23rd. This patch of irregular and scaly skin with a bump is actually painful - especially if I lie on the side of the lesion, at other times it intermittently is painful without any contact with a hard surface or pillow. Are skin cancers painful? Thanks so much.

Thanks for your question on HCM.
Most of skin cancers are painless. Skin infection is painful.
In my opinion you are having skin infection with involvement of supplying lymphnodes by infection. This is known as Scrofuloderma.
It is skin infection with enlarged lymphnode beneath th skin lesion. Most commonly seen in TB infection but can be seen in other bacteral infection too.
Biopsy of the swelling is the neededto rule out infection and malignancy. So better to consult ENT surgeon and get done biopsy.
