What Causes Pain Under The Stomach While Suffering From Hiatal Hernia?

Hello. I have a hiatal hernia and have had acid reflux for about 7 years and have issues with certain foods giving me stomach cramps/gas. I take protonix for it once a day, 40 mg. Last week I was having horrible stomach pains and diarrhea (bright green). That has subsided and stool is just soft, but I am still having pain in my stomach (under the bottom of my left rib). Do you think I need to go see a specialist for this? Or could it have been food poisoning and lasted this long? It s better, but still having a bit of pain.

Hello,

You need to follow these:
1. Continue protonix.
2. Keep Antacid. If after a meal, stomach pain occurs, take Tricaine or any antacid.
3. Diarrhea (the bright green kind) occurred due to starvation. It will go off when you start having nutrition.
4. Feed on a light diet and enough fluid like water and juice.
5. Pain in the bottom of the left rib is just due to a hernia. Consult a doctor for this. Maybe the procedure has to be done for treating it.
6. Do self-care.

Eat small, frequent meals.
Elevate the head of the bed to prevent acid reflux.
Avoid foods that may trigger acid reflux such as spicy, oily or greasy foods, and citrus fruits.
Avoid eating food just before going to bed.
Quit alcohol and smoking.
Maintain a regular exercise regimen.
Self-massage over the abdomen.

Lastly, I would like to highlight the fact that you have to get rid of hiatal hernia first. For that, consult a doctor.

Do not worry, though. You are under good treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
