What Causes Pain Under The Ribs On The Left Side?

I am having pain under my ribs to the left side. I have been scoped and they found a small ulcer. Prilosec was prescribed. I quit taking it because of the studies that state Kidney problems. Is the cure worse than the illness? should I resume the Prilosec?

Hi
That is likely a gastric ulcer. Prilosec may have as side effect kidney symptoms like urinating more or less than usual. This does not mean you can not take the drug. The benefits however will always outnumber the risk in your case. Discontuing the drug without an alternative and without the consent of your Doctor is not good. Without treatment, the ulcer will only increase in side and evolution in the long run may involve more serious health conditions including stomach cancer.I will advise you start back the treatment.See your Doctor to run an H pylori test if not yet done. The treatment is not a treatment for life. You will need it only for some time depending on your response to treatment. You may adopt the following home measures that may help you get over your problem faster:
-Choose healthy diet with fruits/vitamins
-Take food containing probiotics like yogurt, cheese occasionally
-Limit milk and proteins
-Avoid pain medications of the group non steroidal antiinflammatories
-Avoid stress
-Avoid smoking
-Limit/avoid alcohol
-Try to always get enough sleep
All these will help you recover faster and prevent the ulcer from increasing in size.Above all, continue the treatment and see your Doctor occasionally for evaluation.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
