What Causes Pain Under The Rib Cage?

Sharp pain just under the rib-cage on the left side. Has started in the last 24 hours. Food seems to mitigate it, but not entirely. When I lay down, the pain goes away; but when I get up the pain comes again, especially if I sit down and lean forward for a bit.
