What Causes Pain Under The Nail Bed Of The Big Toe?
I have pain under the nail of my left great toe. This has increased despite putting antibiotic ointment on the area. It looks like there may be blood underneath the nail (discoloration). A couple of weeks ago, someone did step on my toe as I was riding the bus here in Chicago. I am concerned because the nail itself seems to be a bit loose.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. The person stepping on your great toe seems to have injured nail bed of the toe causing blood collection undrrneath the nail... so the swelling of the part &pressure on local nerve endings causing pain dicoloration.&loosening of nail... The nail would come off gradually &will be replaced by new growing nail underneath. Growth of new nail would take few months...& then your foot would be normal. *The care taken should be to avoid forceful pulling of loose nail (which can cause repeat bleeding in the same toe.) -Another risk is breaking of infecton . Please keep the Toe very clean (with proper dressing)& protected. Thanks.
