Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having a lot of pain on the right side of my neck. I feel like it is a stiff neck but then get really sharp pain when I lift my arm reaching up to get something above me. I have taken ibuprofen, used a heating pad. Used a topical ointment. Nothing seems to help. It is especially painful when I am sleeping and try to pick my head up off of my pillow. This has been going on for about a week.
Understanding your concern. As per query you have symptoms of pain on the right side of the neck which seems to be due to stiffness of muscles and it could be due to chronic changes leading to spondylosis. Sometimes dental infection ,bruxism or TMJ dysfunction can also cause such symptoms . I would suggest you to start with Diclofenac/ibuprofen which can be effective, if pain is severe so sometimes tramadol can be taken. Pain relief may take few days to weeks. You have to take care of posture and do physical therapy exercises as well. Rest to cervical spine is most important till pain is reduced and completely relieved. You should use cervical collar to prevent unguarded movements. If symptoms keeps on persisting , visit orthopaedician once and get complete examination done. Start treatment after complete examination. Doctor may also refer you to dentist in case of dental problem.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
