General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Steve,
The pain in the upper back may most probably be from age related changes in the vertebrae which are pressing on the nerves. Is it only pain or do you get even numbness and tingling sensation? MRI should be a good study, to find out the reason and treat it too if there is one. Meanwhile I would advise you to use over-the-counter pain medications provided there are no contraindications.
