What Causes Pain In The Upper Rib Cage?

Hello I always get a discomforting pain in my left upper rib.I get it at least once a week for over a year and so.it is too much in that I fail to find any better angle in which to sleep.and even when I sit it still hurts.what could this really be.and is there cause for alarm.Belinda

I have gone through your query.

Gastric discomfort, can be responsible for causing referred pain in region.
First we try to address the stomach problem, and observe for any improvement in shoulder pain.

I would suggest you few measures that will be beneficial.
Take capsule omeprazole 20 mg once daily empty stomach, before breakfast for a week.
Avoid spicy and oily food for few days till the symptoms are resolved. Avoid or reduce the intake of meat, dairy products, and add more fiber to your diet. Eat lots of salads, vegetables, fresh fruits.
Avoid excess consumption of tea/ coffee/ hydrogenated drinks. Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any.
Eat frequent small meals instead of heavy ones and do not starve. Take plenty of water.
Eat light meals prepared under hygienic conditions. Avoid eating fast and talking while eating.
Regular exercise is very much essential. Brisk walk every day for 30 minutes in the morning and then slowly increase the duraTION if time permits. Follow this measures your symptoms should reduce.

Try this measures for week , if this is not of much help then , I would suggest you to go for ultrasound abdomen to rule out other pathology like gall stones.
