What Causes Pain In The Throat While Singing And A Cracked Feeling?

Hi there, I m an amateur singer currently studying my a-levels. For several years my voice has always cracked when I get to a certain part of my range. At first I believed it was because I have never been trained to sing so I always thought it was my lack of technique. However, it is painful to sing and Im always trying to clear my throat because it feels like there is something on my vocal chords. I m always swallowing and constantly drinking water to try and clear it but it just doesn t make any difference at all. The crack is constant too, it never happens just once when I sing the high note, it always cracks. I m worried because my final singing exam is coming up soon and my throat is just getting worse. Thank you.

Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.

I have read the query and understand your concern. The cracking of voice and pain in the throat could possibly be due to small vocal nodules developed due to the strain on vocal cords due to excessive straining of voice in shouting, coughing, singing, etc.Swallowing something or drinking water won't have any effect on the cracking of voice in that case.

Considering that your final singing exam is approaching soon,I suggest you get a stroboscopy done from an ENT specialist for the examination of vocal cord mobility, proximity of vocal cords and vibration.Consultation with an ENT specialist will also help in deciding the course of treatment that is if the nodules are small speech therapy sessions from a speech therapist will help in improvement of voice while larger nodules may require surgery.

Hope this answers the query.

Kindly rate my answer if you find it helpful.Take care.
