What Causes Pain In The Sternum While Swallowing Food?
my wife swallowed some chewed chicken. She is breathing normally, but her swallowing hurts her at a point right at the bottom of the sternum. She has been trying to flush it with water, coke, hot water but after several drinks she throws up the fluid. She is not sick other than that. Suggestions?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have read & understood your concern. The swallowed chicken seems to have soreness because of friction leading to inflammation to delicate mucus membrane ( inner lining ) esophagus. this causes pain while swallowing. She should restrict her diet to milk/ bland semisolid diet for a couple of days... in small & multiple servings daily. Avoid spicy, oily food/ alcohol /smoking. Avoid lying down immediately after eating. Take antacid of Famotidine group over the counter twice a day. Consult a Gastroenterologist in case the symptoms do not regress within 5 days Or if they aggravate ... for addition of antibiotic & other specific drugs. Hope this helps you. Thanks.
