What Causes Pain In The Right Shoulder Blade?

I look at the symptom checker, however, it s hard to explain exactly what is going on by pointing to a general area. It tells me my highest chance with symptoms I chose is pulmonary embolism, but unsure if that is true. I have extreme pain just under and to the left of my right shoulder blade, closer to my lat and it has started to wrap around my side. IF sitting still, most of the time it s ok, however, sneezing, coughing, and many movements are very painful. I have also been coughing up phlegm since. I m hoping it s just a pulled muscle or something like that, just getting thoughts. I m getting into doctor on Monday morning, trying to avoid emergency care unit, not a lot of trust in them, unless absolutely have to...??? Thanks, JR

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The pain may be due to a pulled muscle as you stated but can also occur with conditions such as pleuritis which is inflammation of the lining around the lungs.
Pleuritis can occur with viral illnesses such as the cough/cold that you may be experiencing.

If there is no shortness of breath then pulmonary embolism is unlikely

Treatment may consist of the use of anti inflammatory medications such as naproxen or ibuprofen but you should still see your doctor for assessment.

I hope this helps
