What Causes Pain In The Ribs Upon Coughing?

I have had pain below the left breast from my back around my side to under the breast for about 4 weeks. My ribs are extremely sore on this side....It hurts when I sneeze, cough, or lay on that side...which I do normally sleep on that side with my arm over my head (very painful now). I have been diagnosed with Splenic Flexure Syndrome but it is very different from that gastro pain...???? any thoughts???

Hi,

Generally, prolonged coughing or sneezing causes soreness of the respiratory muscles and causes pain in the rib region which can be alleviated by muscle relaxant and cough suppressants to relieve a cough. Do you have chronic cough?

Next about splenic flexure syndrome which you have been diagnosed with can cause a similar type of pain. What medications are you taking for that? If the pain is due to splenic flexure syndrome it will be relieved typically following bowel movement or burping. There are plenty of medications available for it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Melita Wesley,
