What Causes Pain In The Ribs Upon Coughing?

I just got over bronchitis and a sinus infection about 2 weeks ago. I had a really bad cough and I think I pulled something by my rib. It wasn t too terrible and it started to get better, but then about 3 days ago I got this excruciating pain under my right breast by my rib. I m wondering what this could be as my cough has gotten a little better and the original pain had already started to go away. Could this be something with my rib again? I am in agonizing pain and I can t stand up straight or take in a deep breath because it hurts so much.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be a pulled intercostal muscle, alternatively muscle pain from the viral infection itself, or, finally, the pleuritic affliction of pneumonia.

It is important to take pain killers so that you can breathe normally. If you have a fever or sputum, you should probably receive antibiotics from your own doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
