What Causes Pain In The Rib Cage While Suffering From UTI?

My 89 year old mother recently was hospitalized for severe UTI, dehydration, low potassium level, which all resulted in her falling at night and not being found until the next day. Thankfully she has no broken bones and the UTI and low potassium, dehydration are all ok now. She was hospitalized for 2 weeks and is now in assisted living. She has had severe pain in her thigh which dr. says is sciatica irritated by the fall and lying on floor for hours. She is also complaining of rib and back pain. Nothing seems to be helping the pain. She is taking Lortab 7.5/325 mg, 1 tablet every 4 hours, has a Duragesic 12 mg transdermal patch every 3 days, and Lidoderm patch on 12 hours off 12 hours on her thigh for sciatica. With all of that why is she still in pain?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

I am a little unsure about rib pain being due to sciatica. Sciatica doesn't cause rib pain, it may cause back pain which spreads in the lower limb of the side of the affected sciatic nerve.

So I would discuss with the doctors how sure they are in excluding other possibilities, in particular, fractures caused by the fall, whether any imaging tests have been done in that regard.

As about why there is still pain despite the medication, that may happen, intense pain from sciatica or fractures may be difficult to control with medication (in particular the doctors not giving anti-inflammatory medication, I assume due to fear of side effects at that age).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
