What Causes Pain In The Neck And Ears?

My husband woke up with a very sore neck yesterday morning. Early this morning (second day of symptoms) he is so sore he cannot move right to left. He can move his chin to chest. Now he is complaining his ears hurt and throbbing from right side to left side of neck. We did find a bug bite mark on the original pain spot. Could this just be a pulled muscle? Or could it be something more serious? He is 39 years old and in good health. Just want to know if we should go to EMERG. thx.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain in the neck and ears which sometimes remain persistent and leads to recurrent otitis media and ear pain. But the symptoms can also occur due to condition like bruxism or impacted wisdom tooth. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. You should do warm saline gargles , take steam twice a day and apply warm dry compresses to external ear . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may examine by otoscopic means to check level of infection. Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test and allergy test to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin) at least for 10 days along with decongestant and anti inflammatory. Doctor may also refer you to dentist if there is dental reason for pain and may give you mouth guard and prescribe muscle relaxant.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
