What Causes Pain In The Lower Back And Abdomen?

I had a ruptured colon last May. I had surgery in Dec. to reverse the ostomy but it didn t work and I now have the ostomy again. My stomach, sides, and lower back hurt constantly. I have been told this will go away after I heal good. The doctor mentioned a hernia possibility. I just wondered what the symptoms were.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting with your health query and since unable to examine you directly, or deduce your age/sex, thus following is my opinion:

1. Take an opinion of a Gastroenterologist/ medical specialist who might ask for an investigation like endoscopy, gastric analysis, colonoscopy.

PS. At present all I can say is that it might be a 'gastrointestinal' symptom thus you should contact either a general surgeon, gastroenterologist or Gynecologist.

And if not sure consult your GP who after reviewing your case history and physical examination will refer you to specialist concerned.

2. The most common diagnoses of lower abdominal pain related to uterine, gonadal, renal, and bladder complications.

[less common causes like primary dermatologic and musculoskeletal problems as well as referred pain and neuropathies related to underlying vertebral and spinal cord complications can also occur].

So examination is mandatory for further workup and management.

PS. Females, consult a Gynecologist for any underlying pathologies like endometriosis, uterine fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease [PID].

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Munish Sood, Ayurveda Specialist
