What Causes Pain In The Lower Abdomen After Insertion Of A Copper IUD?

I just had a copper IUD inserted about three weeks ago. When I had it inserted my regular menstrual cycle had just ended. Then after insertion, I had another seven days of bleeding which I attributed to the placement of the IUD. I had a week reprieve with no bleeding and relative normality. Then I started having heartburn. Then I woke up in the middle of the night vomiting and had horrible body pains including back pains and lower abdomen pain including a horrible headache that would not go away. The next day i started bleeding again. This is my third day bleeding and I have lower abdomen pain that hurts to the touch not to mention i am extremely bloated. Should I seek further medical help or is this normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.

If symptoms persists better to consult a gynaecologist and check whether the device misplaced or not.

In that case you might require an ultrasound scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
