What Causes Pain In The Knees During Squatting?

The pain first came during my first class of aerobics, I was doing a squat and I felt pressure and pain on my left knee on my way back up from the squat. I stretched properly beforehand and cooled down afterwards too so I don t know what could have caused it. Back at home I also noticed that when I would pick something up it would hurt too(like getting into a squat position and getting something). Once I get into a fully standing position my knee pops like when I pop my fingers.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
I think you have developed a condition which is called chondromalacia patallae. In this condition there is softening of knee cartilage and it causes pain during squatting and sitting crossleg.
It is common in teenage girls and can be triggered by aerobics, yoga and cycling.
It can be confirmed by MRI of the knee joint.
If there is any doubt then you can show it to sports injury specialist.
Good thing is it is self limiting and can be treated with physiotherapy and Dicerin tablet. If not improved then a minor arthroscopy surgery is a option.
