What Causes Pain In The Jaw And Neck When Diagnosed With Lupus?

Hello Dr, my big brother suffers from lupus and has for the past 15 yrs. I think his worst pain is in his jaw and neck. He is an incredible man who is refusing to take his cortico-steroids anymore because of the side effects. Is there any new answers for him?

Hello,

Your brother is suffering from pain in his jaw and neck. He has history of Lupus since 15 years. Jaw pain can is caused by degenerative changes due to lupus and causes nerve inflammation or destruction and blood vessel obstructions. Lupus is associated with Sjogren’s syndrome and causes pain and damage in the jaw.

He is suggested to get clinically examined by a dentist, treatment of jaw pain is done with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. He is advised to eat healthy foods to soothe stress and to get regular exercise, which releases hormones (endorphins) that reduce pain. Damage to the tissues and salivary glands of the mouth is due to Sjogren's syndrome, a secondary immuno-deficiency disease often found with lupus. Get treated at the earliest.

Neglect may cause complications like burning and cracking of the tongue, cavities, tooth decay, trouble swallowing and pain in the temporomandibular (jaw) joint. He should take care of his oral hygiene. Neck pain from lupus is treated with massage therapy, heating pads, etc. Get him clinically examined by a GP and a dentist. Get him treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
