What Causes Pain In The Heels And Swelling In The Right Ankle?

I have been experiencing what I thought was bilateral heel pain x approximately one year. I am an Athletic Trainer and have treated the pain with OTC NSAIDS, stretching, ice, tension night splints, and orthotics. The pain is now only in my right foot and is very painful if I squeeze my heel medially and laterally. I also get swelling in my right ankle which I have a history of peroneal reconstruction 18 yrs ago. Any thoughts on differential diagnosis, treatment alternatives, etc?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the issue of persistent pain in heels with swelling around ankle indicate possible issue with ankle sprain via injury to anterior talofibular ligament most likely.

In my clinic, I recommend an MRI of the ankle part for most tissue details update and further management guidelines in this chronic painful issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
