What Causes Pain In The Feet After Cycling?

I m a healthy 34 yr old man. I am a long distance, off road, cyclist. I began a race starting in Canada which ends in mexico. The weather was extremely cold and wet. After a few days riding my left foot began to hurt. By the next day, the top of my foot swelled so badly I couldn t Velcro my shoe on. I could peddle fine but standing or normal walking was excruciating. I had xrays done and no fractures found. any ideas?

Hello
Thank you for trusting HCM

Dear may be your suffering from Morton's neuroma.

The nerve that innervates the foot originates from the inner aspect of the ankle and passes under the mid-foot. This nerve subdivides into a number of branches, which extend toward the toes between each of the MTP joints of the toe (knuckles of the foot). The nerve splits to innervate each side of each toe. Repeated compression of the forefoot (either from pressure from underneath the foot or from the sides of the foot) can cause irritation and inflammation of the nerve at the branch point between the MTP joints.

So irritation of nerve cause severe pain, numbness in the foot.

Treatment :adjust the position of foot accordingly to pedal.
Selecting large size pedals and shoes.
Selecting shoes with wider toe box.
Adding a metatarsal pad or bar on the top of shoe insole.

Tab. Naprosyn twice a day.

If symptoms not improved consult your doctor.
