What Causes Pain In The Chest Radiating To The Back?

About 6 weeks ago I began experiencing sudden chest pain in the center of my chest, radiating through my back. I can also feel the sensation up into my jaw bone. If I lay down the pain is worse, than if I sit up and lean forward. It was coming and going the first 5 weeks, but this week is seems to be lingering and becoming more frequent. When I breathe shallow and slow and calm my mind the pain seems to lessen. However it is not disappearing completely as of this week. I have no family history of heart disease & no insurance. What should I do? I am beginning to become a bit frightened by all this. Sincerely, Lisa Holzfaster

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello anxious lisa, thanks for writing to HCM

i read your query and understand your concern regarding the chest pain and discomfort you are experiencing

First of all let me put me your mind at ease by saying that from your symptoms and history and my experience i would say the diagnosis would be anxiety or gastro eosophageal reflux disease(GERD)

Both of which are easily manageable in 90% of the cases.

i would recommend you try to relax and calm yourselves by practising meditation or yoga

As for GERD,I would suggest you to take gelusil or antacid syrup 10ml twice daily along with ranitidine 150mg twice daily and omeprazole tablet before food .

have a alprazolam tablet 0.5mg at night

try the above regimen for a week and i hope you will find significant relief

If the pain worsens,i would recommend you take blood test for cardiac enzymes and an ekg and echo along with a chest x-ray according to suggestion from your physician to rule out other causes

Hope it clarifies and helps you out
Followup if you need advice
Good day,relax and take care

I find this answer helpful
