What Causes Pain In The Chest And Left Shoulder Along With Palpitations?

My son is 13, and is having symptoms mimicing an anxiety attack. His chest is hurting, and his heart is racing and pounding out of his chest. He is also complaining about pain in his left shoulder. Can he have a small dose of Xanax to help him relax and get to sleep?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

I recommend that he be examined by a pediatrician right away.
This could be an anxiety attack but other heart related causes need to ruled out as well.

*is he involved in any rigorous sporting activity
*does he have any other medical illness or take any medication?
*does he have any cold or flu symptoms?
*does he have a fever?

I suggest :
-a pediatrician consult right away
-an electrocardiogram & Echocardiogram.
-blood tests (complete blood count, Thyroid stimulating hormone, free t3 and t4)
-urine analysis.

Based on this and a detailed history, we can arrive at a diagnosis. I advice again giving him xanax without consulting his doctor.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you both good health
