What Causes Pain In The Achilles Tendon After Taking Levofloxacin?

I was prescribed Levofloxacin for a kidney infection. On the second day I noticed severe pain in both Achelies Tendons. I stopped the medication and saw a doctor who gave me another medication for the infection. The infection was taken care of. The tendon pain continued and I ruptured the tendon on my left foot. I am to see a Pediatrist tomorrow. What else should I know?

Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Levofloxacin is an antibiotic of quinolone drug class used to treat kidney infection. Unfortunately, it's use is associated with muscular issues including inflammation or pain in Achilles Tendon.

It's good that you stopped the drug when the pain started, and am happy to know that the other medication took care of the infection.

As the tendon has been ruptured, this means that Levofloxacin is not the main cause. Perhaps your daily activities or local structure of the tendon or even shoes you wear could have caused the rupture in this tendon. While, levofloxacin might have precipitated the problem to worse.

Seeing the podiatrist is the best thing you should do in order to:
- treat the ruptured tendon
- discuss with podiatrist about possible cause and prevention for future relapse.

Hope this helps.
