General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Eating a low fiber diet and inadequate hydration are the common cause of constipation. Any history of mucus or blood in stool should be ruled out. Stool softeners like lactulose can be taken 15 ml at night to reduce the discomfort. These drugs can take 2 to 3 days to act. Increase in hydration is also essential along with high fibre diet like vegetables and fruits.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
