Hi,

I got that your wife is suffering from night leg cramps also called as nocturnal leg cramps. Nocturnal leg cramps is the condition in which there is involuntary contractions or cramps of the leg muscles. Muscles of the thigh also involved in some individuals. There is no specific confirmed reason for the disease. More common cause are dehydration, muscle fatigue due to poor stretching and inactive lifestyle, prolonged sitting also cause this syndrome.

Diabetic individuals or the people with renal failure may also have nocturnal leg cramps. Alcoholism, low blood sugar, old age, spinal nerve compression are some of the reasons for the disease. Stretching before going to bed, drinking plenty of fluids, active lifestyle may helps to overcome the disorder. If there is any metabolic disease, appropriate medication to keep them under control will prevent the leg cramps. Several drugs may cause leg cramps as side effects. Discuss with your physician about the possible cause with history.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
