What Causes Pain In Legs After Having Malarone?

I am currently taking Malarone (Atovaquone) because I am traveling in Myanmar. I have been taking the medication for a week. Yesterday I began to have pain in my legs and hips. Is this a side- effect of the Malarone? What do you recommend? I started taking Aleve this morning.

Hello
Thank You for contacting HCM.
Welcome to Health Care Magic.
My name is Dr Muhammad Ahmad & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way.

Yes Malarone has been reported to have caused pain in patients but these reports are not very frequent,In your case i can't say with surety that this pain was caused by Malarone.
Because you told that for week almost you didn't face any issues with it,

Other possible causes:
1-You over fatigued your body
2- Your long travels
3- unstable sitting position
4- Wrong sleeping posture
5- Common muscle spasm

In my opinion decision of starting Aleve was a good one you can take it to a dose of 500 mg twice a day though as little as you can keep is better.Id your leg or back feels stiff get an over the counter low dose muscle relaxant which you can get easily from where you are, ask them to give you something from a multinational pharma and muscle relaxants sometimes have wonderful effects combined with Aleve.
Keep the area of pain warm... take some rest and don't over work,
If your work requires you to sit much ...support your back well.
If things don't get better in 3-4 days consult a doctor.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow
up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.
Wishing you good health

HI
Well come to HCM
Your symptoms of leg pain and hip pain are not due to medicine "Atovaquone" but may be due to something else, if you do not have any other symptoms like fever and headache, vomiting, then this is not to worry, because this could be muscular pain and would come around on its own, no need to treat this, of course you can have more drinking water, hope this information helps, take care and have a nice day.
