What Causes Pain In Joints And Muscles?
I have been suffering with aching joints and muscles since the weekend, today I have a fever of 38.5 a swollen parotid gland, slight sore throat and very sore red inflamed nose with the redness spreading to my cheeks. I have seen a doctor today who said I have pustular pharyngitis and have been given penicillin v .i have taken 2 doses but my nose and cheeks are worse.

Your pain in joints and muscles is due to the infection of throat. Infection causing fever and pain in joints. The following are my suggestions:
1) Take tab. Acetaminophen every 6th hourly until the fever subsides.
2) Antibiotics are certainly necessary. Tab. Amoxicillin clavulanic acid 500mg/125mg thrice daily for 5 days.
3) Salt warm water gargles daily twice is recommended
4) If your pain in joints and muscles is unbearable, you can take a tab. Ibuprofen.
5) Take plenty of fluids and adequate rest.
If your symptoms don't subside in 3 days, then you need to go to a physician for further evaluation.

In my knowledge, if your symptoms have gotten worse this could be due to allergy to penicillin specially redness of cheeks and inflamed nose so I would recommend you stop this medication and consult your prescribing doctor so that he can prescribe you an alternative antibiotic. I think you should get a test dose first to make sure you are not allergic to the new medicine too.
