What Causes Pain In Ear And Right Side Of The Face?

I notice that I have a nearly constant sore pain that I can feel at the top ridge of the zygomatic arch in front of my ear tab (middle of the ear) (pic at http://classes.midlandstech.edu/carterp/Courses/bio110/chap06/chap06.html) on the right side of my face, which sometimes seems to cause shooting pains on the right side; stressful thoughts and certain head positions seem to elicit it. I noticed that I was able to feel a pulse on the left side along the ridge, but not the right side, and so I found that the opthalmic artery runs along the arch which is where I can feel soreness. I half think it s a dislodged jaw (Had a football accident about a year ago), but half think it might be partial occlusion of the opthalmic artery. Should I be concerned and if so, how can I get it checked?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Do you have this pain since the football injury or you have recently developed it? If it is since the football injury, there is a chance that the zygomatic arch may have a little crack that may not have healed yet and is causing the soreness.

If you are feeling pain while opening and closing jaws or your jaw feels unable to close sometimes or makes popping or clicking noises while movements, then it might be a TMJ injury. It does not seem to be related to the opthalmic artery as there will be more symptoms related to it than you have described.

I would advise you to consult an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for physical examination and further investigations like x-ray, CT Scan, MRI etc. to reach the diagnosis for the problem.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
