What Causes Pain Around The Toes?

Good Afternoon, My Primary Care Doctor told me that I have nerve damage in my feet. He prescribed Gamapetine for the pain, especially at night. That was five years ago. For the last several weeks, I wake up with pain underneath my right foot near the toes. It actually hurts to touch. Last night It hurt so bad that it kept me awake and I had to take Tylenol for the pain. The pain finally went away. What causes nerve damage and the pain associated with it.. I was told that I do not have diabetes as shown in blood tests. Please help. It is driving me crazy at night.
