What Causes Pain Around An Umbilical Hernia Removal Site?

I have concerns regarding a surgical repair of a umbilical hernia. It has been approximately 2 1/2 years since my surgery. I noticed some pain after leaving the gym about 2 weeks ago. I did not have to any concerns at the time; however there has been continued pain (burning, dull throbing). There is no change in appearance. My concern is that the pain has not stopped. Is there a concern of infection. I have and appointment three days from now with the Doctor. Any thoughts on what the problem is, and how concerned should I be of infection in that period of time?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I don’t think that this could be an infection if there is no redness, fever, or pus secretion around the scar. In every case, it may always be a hernia recurrence so ultrasound or MRI scan should be done or surgical examination. If this is felt deeply in abdominal cavity then some other causes not related to your hernia surgery may exist such as diverticulosis or IBD. So, I suggest having an easier diet for few days, taking nonsteroidal painkillers and rest. If there is no improvement you should do these imaging tests that I have recommended.

Wish you a good health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
