Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain And Swelling On The Top Of The Feet?
Three weeks ago I rolled my right ankle over and immediately a knot appeared on top of my foot along the fifth metatarsal. I had considerable swelling, bruising and redness in the area of the knot. I still have swelling and pain in that area. Two sets of digital X-rays showed no signs of fracture. What else could cause this?
When we get trauma of the foot, the bones can fracture or not, the xray helps with this diagnosis even thought the xrays in the first week may come out normal. To be more sure that there is no fracture the xrays can be repeated after a week, especially if the pain is not better or is getting worse.
If there is no fracture then a possible cause of the lump and pain is tendon or muscle trauma which might take a few weeks to heal and be painless.
Meanwhile you can take some ibuprofen to help with the pain, a foot splint to help mobilize a little the leg could help and adjusting shoes to wear wide comfortable shoes that won't hurt the area.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj General & Family Physician
