What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Hand And Wrist?

Hi, my name is Ashley Schaeffer. I have been dealing with swelling hand and painful wrist. I went to a couple doctors but no one seems to tell what s the exactly that I have. I have MRI, X-ray and blood work and came back negatives gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and everything else. My wrist has been hurting after my knee surgery since Sept 2016... I have to take aleve to help me to function. What can I do? Please help Thank you, Ash

Well, if there was no some trauma or injury then hand swelling is usually caused by damage, irritation or compression of one of the nerves or a branch of one of the nerves in your arm and wrist.Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness, although with diabetes similar symptoms usually occur first in your feet.
However, your symptoms indicate that there is compressive neuropathy which is seen in carpal canal syndrome or cubital syndrome. You need to do EMG first to confirm diagnosis and then it can be treated with local steroid shots or surgical decompression. Also, physical therapy may be beneficial.
