What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Finger?

My son had a swollen finger for about 2 weeks before it got so painful he went to Dr. They drained it and put him on antibiotics. They made him kind of sick but he stuck it out. He has had a temp. of 101 to 102 for a few days and went back to Dr. today and they stopped his antibiotics because he was almost done but have started him on doxicyline and are testing him for tick born deseases and Zika...his platelet count is low I think102,000. Ideas? He did not have MRSA.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling of the finger was due to infection and after draining the course of antibiotics helps in the elimination of the infection and prevent further ones. The fever was mainly due to the same.

The doctor has put him on different medicines considering other possibilities depending on the causative agent.

So I would suggest you to follow your doctor’s advice and continue with the treatment guide. If you have doubts you can always talk to your doctor and get it cleared.

The tests are done to see if any other organisms is casuing this as per the blood reports ( low platelets) and the prevalance of similar cases in the geographic area. With appropriate treatment, improvement will be seen.

So continue with the medicines and go for regular follow-ups as per your doctor’s advice. If you are still in doubt you can always take a second opinion or consult another doctor of your choice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
