Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My blood pressure is 161/94. My chest has been hurting about once a week with these type of pains. My bp is not always high when this happens. Feels like my sternum is caving in towards my back, but not like an elephant sitting on my chest. I just took several tums thinking it may be gas. I was 2 days behind on bp med. But took it yestterday after i got it. I take amlodipine/benaz 10/20 mg and atenolol 50 mg. I am diabetic and on metformin 850 3xday and glyburide 2.5mg. Pains seems to eaze a little with sitting up and putting elbows together to stretch the back with taks some pressure off of sternum. Can gas feel like this and cand you have heart attack with this low of np reading?
I think you should immediately go to the hospital and visit your cardiologist. I think you will need an EKG followed by stress echocardiography. And I suspect you may be in need of a coronary angiography, followed by angioplasty.
Do not walk too much. If possible rest as much as you can till the cardiologist is done with your tests. Avoid all strenuous work like lifting heavy weights, walking fast etc. You need to be completely relaxed.
I would recommend all these measures and anti-platelets and statins to any patient I was treating in my clinic for these symptoms. Medicines like Ecosprin AV, Sorbitrate are indeed needed. Please do not take this lightly. This can be potentially serious. You are a diabetic and the pain may not be as severe as "Elephant sitting on Chest".In fact often diabetics do not develop pain at all.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saumya Mittal,
Diabetologist
