What Causes Pain Above The Breast While Breathing And Moving The Arm?

I am having chest pain above my breast area that hurts when I take a deep breath or move my right arm. Went to the ER earlier today for pain in my sternum and EKG, blood work and chest x-ray were apparently fine. Was told 20 years ago that I have mitral and tricuspid valve prolapse with regurgitation. Haven t had that checked or had any problems with it since then. Have no idea what the problem is right now.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pain, usually sharp or achy, that happens int he rib cage or around the sternum (breast bone) that is worse with the movement of the chest wall such as moving the arm or breathing, is usually costochondritis. This is inflammation of the cartilage/connective tissue of the rib cage. Treatment is rest and if you have no contraindications to taking NSAIDs, then ibuprofen or naproxen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
