What Causes Occasional Vertigo?

I do drink whiskey... maybe 3 or 4 Manhattans a night. Just to relax for I lost wife 6 years ago and find the loneliness is bit overbearing. Don t think I m alcoholic, believe it s a habit for don t have problem in traveling on long road trips, out with family or friends but therapist thinks it s a problem. I m 77 and happy but do sometimes during the day, working outside, occasionally loose balance, true in shower also. Also need to have hearing tested. Very active person, no health issues except cholesterol. I do smoke moderately.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Smoker, old age with balance problems may be due to

1. BPPV
2. arthritis or muscle weakness induced balance loss.
3. labyrinthitis
4. posterior circulation incompetent.
5. infection.
6. normal pressure hydrocephalus etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Please avoid high risk activities. consult your neurophysician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
