What Causes Occasional Lower Back Pain While Sitting?

I have the occasional lower back pain where I feel like a stabbing sensation when sitting. When I try to stand I can barely make it into an upright position. This happens around my menstrual cycle also. Sometimes if I stand fast I can prevent being in a bent position and hurting. What s wrong with me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Back pain might be due to muscle sprains or strains (caused by sudden movements or lifting heavy objects), sciatica, degenerative disc or lumbar herniated disc disease, spinal deformities, osteoarthritis etc.
I advise you to:
- Take analgesics and muscle relaxant twice or thrice daily with antacid
- Bed rest
- Hot fomentation to the back twice  daily
- Avoid lifting heavy weights, bending or twisting your back and sitting for a long time
- Lumbar corset should be used all the day if it's chronic
- Physiotherapy

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
