What Causes Numbness In The Testicles After A Hernia Surgery?

Hi, my 33 year old son had Hernia Surgery about 3 weeks ago, in the groin area. I m not sure which side it was. He s not here to ask at the moment. He now complains of numbness in the relevant testicle/ scrotum. Is this normal? The surgeon reckons there may have been some nerve damage, during the procedure. If this is so, what can be done about it? Will the nerve(s) regenerate in time. Roughly, how long could it take as each individual is different? As his mother, I m extremely concerned! I know that all operations have the risk factor but am not familiar with this type of scenario. Please can you be of some assistance & hopefully put our minds at peace.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM.

After the initial hernia repair there is always a risk of nerve injury. When someone has gone through two inguinal surgeries there is a very high likelihood of injury to the ilioinguinal and genitofemoral nerve. This can lead to numbness and tingling of the inner thigh and medial groin area

Swelling and numbness may persist for several weeks to months. The numbness is likely the result of cutting through the skin and the small nerve endings, in addition to nerve stretch and irritation from the swelling. Give it a few weeks to months, and continue to follow up with your general surgeon. They can provide you with reassurance.

Wish you good health. Regards
