What Causes Neuropathic Symptoms In The Feet While On Nitrofurantoin?

I seem to be having neuropathic symptoms in my feet but have good arterial pulses, minimal edema, and no obvious risk factors like diabetes. I do take nitrofurantoin 50 mg daily for UTI prophylaxis and have been on it for 20+ years. I m 61 years old, only minimally active, but wonder if that small dose of my med could be the culprit and would it reverse if I could stop taking it. Thanks but I ll just talk with my provider about it.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are many potential causes for lower limb neuropathy. I think it is a good idea to talk to your provider about it. It is not necessarily the Nitrofurantoin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
