What Causes Nausea , Stomach Bloating And Loose Stools After Taking Plavix?

I have been on plavix for 3 months. I am only taking half of the 75mg dose because the full dose made me feel so awful. I am still having loose stools 3 times a day, bloating and feeling a bit nauseous all the time. I have also been told that I have to be on plavix for the rest of my life, and/or I could go off it after a year. This was told to me by my cardio-vascular surgeon. I am confused by the mixed message. I had a stent put in my LAD. Other arteries are still blocked pretty badly. Why didn t the doctor fix some of the other arteries at the same time?

Plavix (clopidogrel) can cause gastrointestinal distress like nausea, diarrhoea in some patients. If the loose stools continue for more days, I would recommend you to consult your cardiologist and ask for alternatives that include ticlodipine and aspirin. These drugs are to be taken for 6months-1year and then risk/benefits are assessed for continuation.
LAD (left anterior descending) coronary artery is one of the main artery. The stent placement ensures the blockade is not affecting the blood supply to heart. The decision on the number of stents to be placed and which artery will be chosen will be decided on extent of block and the arteries involved. Usually multiple stents are not placed, rather for such patents coronary bypass surgery (CABG-open heart surgery) is preferred. So, I think that your surgeon has taken a right decision depending upon the investigations.
I hope the above information helps you in resolving your concerns. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic.
