What Causes Nausea And Dizziness After Lowering Diphenhydramine Dosage?

Have been taking 400 mg of diphenhydramine for sleep for several months. Started at 50 mg and need for sleep led me to more and more. No withdrawal symptoms were mentioned on pkg or internet. I dropped back to 76 mg and soon thought I had a severe case of stomach flu. I no longer think that as timing was too coincidental. Have experienced severe nausea, vomiting shortly after eating or drinking small amounts, dizziness, exhaustion for 5 days and it s not lessening. I am 67 years old and diabetic. Thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the dizziness is due to alteration in the neuronal release from the CNS which were previously under control of high dose diphenhydramine.

* Nausea, vomiting is associated with stress-induced gastritis.

* Intake of PPI with hydration maintenance and dose adjustments of the current drug with your physician is mandatory here to proceed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
