What Causes Nasal Congestion After Waking From Sleep?

Everytime my husband wakes up for work (he works 3rd shift and usually wakes up around 8:30pm), he immediately has snot (his term) running down his face (not literally, but close) and he , probably from the mucus running down his throat. Is there something you can suggest he take before he goes to sleep to reduce the severity of symptoms when he gets up?? He will go through a half a box of tissues in the 70 minutes before he leaves for work and he says he continues blowing his nose on his way to work. He also refuses to see a doctor, he says they can t do anything anyway. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi thanks for your question.

This might be simple viral or allergic infection for common cold.

You can do his CBC , if it shows eosinophilia then allergic cause confirmed.

He can have allergy to certain substance or it can occur as seasonal or whether change.

Treat it symptomatically.

For reducing secretions he can take antihistaminic drug like levo cetrizine or chlorpheniramine like drug.

If blocked nose present then oxymetazoline or azelestine nasal spray can be taken.

Here nothing seems severe.

If symptom increasing then further work up done according to symptom and examination.

Take care.
