What Causes Muscular Spasms After Taking Lidocaine And Marcaine?

Hello I went to the dentist to have my wisdom teeth removed and after receiving the anesthesia I was not able to open my mouth wide enough to get the procedure done. The dentist was not sure why this happened and said that I probably experienced a muscular spasm. The anesthesia that I was given was Lidocaine and Marcaine. I wanted to know if this was a side effect of this drug. Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Yes, it can be a muscle spasm and at times anesthesia injection can cause it. The reason is not that it can be a side effect of the medicine injected but can be due to the injection being penetrating into the muscle causing it to get into spasm making it tense and tight. However, the reaction is temporary and will subside soon.

You can take muscle relaxants like Chlorzoxazone as it helps in relaxing the muscles and ease in opening the mouth. Warm compresses can also help. Try to gently open the mouth wider under limits of tolerance. Do cheek blowing exercises 3 times a day.

In case if there is no improvement consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
